sidewalks in Pacifica-Moana Way

Moana Way off of Oceana Blvd has several problem areas in which some road improvements would increase safety, and give those with disabilities access. There are also dog walkers in the area daily, often walking several dogs at one time.

The most dangerous problem on
Moana Way is the sidewalks. They are missing in areas causing serious safety issues. I have seen a local resident in a wheelchair going down the center of the street between cars, and joggers jogging in the center of the street because there is nowhere else to be. With unemployment at 10.5% in California as of this writing, more people aren't leaving for work these days, so there are more cars parked along the street, this leaves a very narrow passage for through traffic.

Pacifica can create some of the jobs the stimulus package is suppose to create. By improving it's infrastructure through the creation of a safe sidewalk system with disabled access. The placement of signs enforcing speed limits (cars speed up and down Moana Way, making turns onto side streets without using signals, without even braking to see if a person or dog might be in the street.) The placement of warning signs to be careful of children on bikes.

I've witnessed some close calls on this street. Being a regular pedestrian myself, I have felt the
vulnerability to dangerous situations because of these safety issues. It's easy to go along day after day and believe we can't do any better than this. But, this is a popular area, it's close to ocean, the homes that go up for sale here, actually get sold, even during this economic downturn. This is an area that will continue to grow. It's not a question of if we can do better, the challenge is that we must do better, we have to improve the access and safety of the streets of Pacifica.

  1. Hola Vicki!
How cool that you're keeping a blog specifically centered on Pacifica. I've always really liked it there, almost like a best kept secret in the bay area.
You make a very compelling argument for better infrastructure in regards to pedestrian safety. It boggles the mind that people still drive like maniacs. You would think an economic downturn would have the nice effect of slowing people down. But alas, human nature is strange.
Thank you for the kudos on my drawings. I have a new one up!
